A Letter to [An Emotion]
A letter-writing exercise to connect with your emotions by giving them a voice.
Why it works
It's possible to access your own wisdom from tapping into emotions that you might not typically appreciate or express.
How to practice
- Think of one emotion you would like to explore and deepen your relationship with. Set a timer for 10 minutes and write a short letter to yourself as that emotion. Begin the letter with:
- Dear [your name], I am your [emotion], and this is what I’m here to tell you…
Good to know
- You might describe
- - Where the emotion lives in your body - Memories of when you felt it intensely - What it needs from you - Wisdom it has for you - Ways it has kept you safe - Places or people you might feel safe to express it to
- Try not to censor your writing; attempt to write as honestly as you can, knowing that no one but you ever needs to read it.
